An Algebraic Journey Through Geometry, Gravity, and Quantum Spacetime
Joseph Godino
Observable Reality explores differential geometry and general relativity through an observables-first, coordinate-free approach. Beginning with the algebra of smooth functions, it reconstructs points, tangent and cotangent spaces, differential forms, and exterior calculus, then introduces the additional structures needed for metric geometry, connections, and curvature.
The manuscript develops these ideas step by step, pairing geometric explanations with mathematical derivations and coordinate calculations. It is an evolving book, freely available as a public draft.
The book develops an observable approach to geometry through:
• Foundations: recovering points, infinitesimal structure, and tangent and cotangent spaces from smooth observables.
• Exterior calculus and topology: differential forms, exterior differentiation, integration, Stokes’ theorem, and de Rham cohomology.
• Metric geometry and curvature: metrics, connections, parallel transport, geodesics, curvature, and geodesic deviation.
Planned developments include diffeomorphism covariance, flows and Lie derivatives, Einstein gravity, and possible connections to quantum spacetime.
Joseph Godino holds a Ph.D. in physics and has longstanding interests in mathematics and computing. In Observable Reality, he develops an observables-first approach to geometry and gravitation, emphasizing coordinate-free reasoning and step-by-step mathematical development.
The manuscript reflects an ongoing investigation into how geometric structures arise from observables and how this perspective may illuminate general relativity and quantum spacetime.
